How do your products use or challenge conventions and how do
they represent social groups or issues?

We used some conventions of a thriller film in
order to help create our opening sequence for a thriller film. We also used
general conventions of a short film, such as making it between 2 and 15
minutes, which are common lengths of short films. We also used the convention
of how storylines are generally kept simple and easy to follow and will be
based over a short period of time. The narrative is usually condensed and there
is limited dialogue. We only have a few moments of dialogue in our AS
production, so we can say that we followed this convention in the process of
creating our production. In terms of characters, due to the length and
simplicity in storyline, a short film will usually introduce between 1 and 3
main characters as creating back stories and developing characters is again
limited. We comply with this convention in our opening sequence, as we only
have two main characters in the opening sequence. There is also usually a twist
in short films, which is the case in our AS opening sequence. We have in our
production that the killer gets the wrong target, and has to run away from the
scene of the crime. Overall, we can see that we mainly follow the conventions
of a short film in our opening sequence, showing evidence that we comply with
these conventions.
In terms of the conventions of
the thriller genre, we also follow many conventions of this genre. In terms of
suspense, we have moments where we aimed to create this suspense, in order to
fulfil this. We made it so that when we were editing, we added transitions such
as fades to black, in order to create this suspense. In terms of the themes and
the characters and their roles, we tried to create a similar link with other
thriller films with our assassin theme. We had one of the characters play an assassin,
and another character playing the target. We felt that this would follow the
conventions of the thriller genre by using these characters, as well as
following a theme from this kind of genre. The story and the setting also
follow the conventions of a thriller genre. The story follows the usual theme
of a usual thriller film, where as the setting, in the target’s home, also
follows the conventions of the setting. After producing the film, we realised
that we have complied with these three major conventions of a thriller genre.
In terms of the of the
representation of social groups in our film, we only tended to use white middle
class students to portray our characters. Looking back, we could have changed
this, however we did not feel that it was necessary to do so, as we were not
trying to represent any social group in the film, as we felt this may take away
from the opening sequence itself. We did not try to challenge any stereotypes,
as we felt that our opening sequence did not need to create these stereotypes
through the social groups, as we would rather the audience focus on the film
itself rather than the wider implications of the opening sequence. Therefore,
you could say that we did not use any stereotypes, apart from using the similar
conventions of a thriller film.
The themes and issues that we
mentioned are stereotypical, as most of these issues do not happen in a normal
society. In England, it is not common for an assassin culture to become a
normal job. With this in mind, it would be impossible to create this
non-stereotypically, because we would not know how to show an non-stereotypical
of this type of murder. With this in mind, you can say that our product, our
opening sequence to a thriller film, both uses conventions of a short film and
the normal conventions of the thriller genre.
