NARRATIVE THEORIES
|
|
Theory 1: Bordwell
|
David
Bordwell made a formalist approach based on the distinction between story and
plot. He said that the story is a chronological sequence of events, but that
the plot was the sequence of events in which the audience experiences them.
According to Bordwell, all films function using a cause and effect chain of
events.
He thought
that filmmakers make narratives more mysterious or suspenseful by altering
the plot from the story

Theory 2: Todorov
|
Tzvetan
Todorov was a famous narratologist who argued that all stories have a similar
structure.
He said that
you have
· Equilibrium
· Significant Event
· Recognition by Hero
· Attempt to Repair
· New Equilibrium
The new
equilibrium is often different and better to the old equilibrium
|
Theory 3: Propp
|
Vladimir
Propp studied hundreds of traditional folk tales to establish character types
He decided
these were split into:
· Hero
· Villain
· Dispatcher
· Donor
· Princess
· Sidekick
|
Theory 4: Levi-Strauss
|
Claude
Levi-Strauss argues that there were Binary Oppositions in every narrative.
These reflect the culture from which they emerge.
They are neutral oppositions that are loaded positively or negatively in a
way that reflects a cultures dominant ideology
|
Theory 5: Pam Cooke
|
Pam Cook
argues that films contained their own kinds of narrative. Filmic/cinematic
narratives are defined by
· Goal Orientated characters
· A cause and effect
narrative trajectory
· A clear resolution
· A high degree of narrative
closure
